Missing capacitor from GPU flex cable

Hi, I needed to remove the GPU flex cable using hot air as I was experiencing problems and noticed that the capacitor C1 on the GPU flex cable had come off in the process. Does anyone know if the capacitor that you remove on the PU18 board can be used to replace this or know where I can get a replacement?

The photo shows the problem I have. Thanks

Yes, you can reuse the capacitor from the PU18 board. The one on the flat flex relocates the capacitor on the PS1 main board. It's a 100nF 0402 ceramic capacitor.

Thanks for your reply, chriz2600. I shall give that a go and replace the cap with the one I took off the PCB. Glad I kept hold of it now. Thanks again! 😁

I did try to solder the capacitor onto the GPU ffc I took off my PU18 board, but unfortunately, I applied heat for too long and it has ripped the pad clean off (see photo below) :-(

If I bridge this pin on the GPU ffc (pin 7 - B3) and re-solder the capacitor back onto the board, would this work or am I doomed and will I need a brand new GPU ffc? To be honest, I don't really want to be doing this as it would be a bodge job and I wouldn't be happy with it.

If I do need a new GPU ffc, do you know where can I get them from in the UK? 8Bit mods do not seem to have them on their website and they've not got back to my email from a week ago.

Many Thanks

You could try to run this without the capacitor at all, as it's "only" a decoupling capacitor. The trace destroyed is ground and the pin still has connection to ground through the PS1 main board. I have one test system, where all four capacitors aren't installed and it runs fine, although I can not recommend doing this as the GPU may experience undervoltage situations without the decoupling.

I managed to bridge the connection on the flext using a tiny piece of wire and re-soldered the capacitor on so it's all good but thank you for your reply chriz2600 🤜
