Running PS1Digital firmware 1.3.4 (and Xstation 1.0.5)
In 'Wipeout' - anytime your Player is hit by a missile or mine from an enemy ship, the screen drops to silent black for 3-seconds, and then resumes. Your character has drifted during this time, so the game was still running during the drop-out. This happens with every resolution option.
In 'Wipeout XL' - the same black screen can be re-created simply by navigating through the Main Menu into the OPTIONS.
I'm wondering if someone else can also test. Switching to normal Composite cables - the issues goes away, so its definetly something with the HDMI output. Tested with several monitors and both NTSC/PAL versions of the games - same result. Wipeout is my reason for owning a PSX, so curious if these are known issues, or perhaps a bad configuration on my end. I haven't run into this issue yet with other games.
